Thursday, Jan 11th:

Primary Series Led Class 7-8:30am

The Four Aims of Life: 9-10am
In this lecture we will talk about the four aims of life in the Hindu tradition: purpose, a means to attaining that purpose, the fulfillment of purpose, and freedom from bondage. We will look at verses from the Bhagavad Gita, Yoga Sutras, and Bhagavata Purana that speak about these aims, and how yoga is a practice that helps us in feeling what our purpose is (and how purpose can change).

Evening Puja and Chanting 7-9pm
It is auspicious in the Hindu tradition to begin all undertakings with a Ganesh puja for success, and the removal of obstacles. We will also have our first chanting class, where you will begin to learn the Lakshmi Ashtakam, the eight verses to the Goddess of Prosperity.

Friday, Jan 12th

Primary Series Led Class 7-8:30am

Yoga Mala: More About Dharma 9-10am
In the first line of Yoga Mala, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois wrote that Yoga is an action that is performed without a desire for result, and is coupled with righteousness, or, dharma . In just the first few words of Yoga Mala he sets the stage for the entire purpose and meaning of Yoga. For this morning lecture, we’ll continue the discussion of dharma from day one in light of the teachings from Yoga Mala.

Yoga Therapy: 7-9pm
We’ll begin the evening class with chanting the Ganesha bija mantra and the Lakshmi Ashtakam, followed by a discussion on the different classifications of Nadi Shodana, or, the nerve purifications done with breathing. We will finish the last hour of class with some simple yoga therapy postures that are good for calming the nervous system and preparing you for pranayama practices.

Saturday, Jan 13th

Mysore class 6:30-10:30am

Mysore Journals: 12:30 - 2:30pm
In 1999 and 2000, Pattabhi Jois was giving small talks and question and answer sessions out of his home in Lakshmipuram on almost a daily basis. Sometimes he would sit quietly for long periods of time, or read the newspaper, and sometimes students would ask him questions. At other times, he would speak about whatever came into his mind. At the beginning of 1999, I was in Mysore for my yearly trip, and everyday I would write down everything he said during the afternoon gatherings (that he tongue in cheek called “conference”). In this lecture, I’ll share some of my journal entries with you, that give a glimpse into Guruji’s humor, yogic knowledge and experience of Yoga. We will also chant the Ganesha bija mantra and Lakshmi Ashtakam.

Yoga+Science Conference: 4-8pm
Eddie and Russian yogis will share their scientific explorations on Yoga.

Sunday, Jan 14th

Mysore class 6:30-10:30am

Q&A and closing ceremony 12:30-2:30 pm
We will dedicate the bulk of our final class to Q&A. Please bring any questions with you about material we covered over the weekend, or any other questions that are on your mind. As in each other class, we will chant the Ganesha bija mantra and the Lakshmi Ashtakam, and we will close with a final Ganesha Arati (waving of the lights).
